THE ASH GROVE
"The Ash Grove" is a story that must be told by those who were there, a rich fabric of voices recounting the excitement, the drama and the conflict inherent in both the Ash Grove club and the era. A current documentary team has begun gathering archival footage and filming interviews with performers such as Taj Mahal and Pete Seeger, as well as with former workers from the club and founding impresario Ed Pearl. More interviews are yet to be done of other performers and workers, such as the waitress who married Roger McGuinn of the Byrds, the now-prominent federal judge who started as the club's lawyer, and audience members including rock journalist Robert Hilburn (LA Times), singer Mick Jagger, FBI operatives, and arson experts, and a long list of emerging artists who hung around the Ash Grove, absorbing the unique mix of music, culture and politics --artists like Bob Dylan, Roger Mcguinn, Joan Baez, Jim Croce, Dave Von Ronk, Arlo Guthrie, Bonnie Raitt, the Chambers Brothers, Leo Kotke, Linda Ronstadt, the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, and Country Joe McDonald, all of whom would create the musical explosion that followed. "The Ash Grove" will weave performance clips, photographs, and interviews to recreate the far-reaching sphere of the club. ..... The documentary's music will be culled from over 3,000 hours of recorded live performance from the Ash Grove and the option of releasing an extraordinary soundtrack CD is available. Filming will also be done at the UCLA 50th anniversary concert that is bringing together the incredibly exciting performing artists of the Ash Grove. The current filmmaking team replaces an earlier group of extremely well-regarded award-winning filmmakers who initially developed the idea of an Ash Grove documentary. That project was led by Academy, ACE and three-time Emmy -Award winning producer/director Paula Mazur, whose last project for PBS was also a music documentary. Also attached to the project was writer-director Anne Makepeace (Robert Capa in Love and War; Coming to Light).
